Shane O’Dea is a professor emeritus of English and the public orator at Memorial University. Long involved with preservation in Newfoundland, he has chaired the boards of Heritage Canada, the Newfoundland Heritage Foundation, the Newfoundland Historic Trust and the Newfoundland Historical Society. Co-author of two books on Newfoundland buildings, he has published a number of articles and reviews, organized seven exhibitions and given some 50 papers on Newfoundland’s material history and architecture. At Memorial University, he was co-director of the Centre for Material Culture Studies, and chair of the Smallwood Centre for Newfoundland Studies and the editorial board of Newfoundland Studies. He has also been a board member of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, the Atlantic Canada Institute and the Vernacular Architecture Forum. In 1988, he was given Memorial University’s first Award for Distinguished Teaching and named Canadian Professor of the Year. In 2002, he was made a 3M teaching fellow and, in 2005, appointed to the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. Shane O’Dea has been a member of the Canadiana Fund since November 5, 2005.
